Holly Beecham came home to Cardinal, Indiana to do good work: kind, practical intimacy counseling for couples and individuals who need help saying the hard things out loud. Unfortunately, Cardinal is a two-stoplight town where everyone hears everything, and Bunny Sutherland's Historical Preservation Society has decided Holly's storefront is a threat to public decorum. Then Eli Garrett, a new freshman at Cardinal High, tells his classmates Holly's office is a brothel. His father, Sam Garrett, arrives to apologize, mortified and inconveniently attractive. Holly wants to handle the rumor with calm professionalism. Cardinal wants to turn it into casseroles, PTA meetings, public hearings, and one very aggressive newspaper story. As Bunny escalates from complaint notices to a full rezoning push, Holly has to fight for the practice she built while falling for the single dad whose son accidentally lit the match.
